Happy Independence day to our beloved country!

Every 1st October in Nigeria, citizens gather nationwide to celebrate Nigeria’s independence.

The Northern and Southern protectorates, together with the colony of Lagos, were amalgamated in 1914 to form the area now known as Nigeria. Nigeria is rich in history, culture, tradition, and natural resources. The country is referred to as the Giant of Africa.

The country has more than 250 ethnic groups spanning all the regions in the country. The Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa are the country’s largest and major ethnic groups of all the ethnic groups in Nigeria.

The Yorubas are primarily found in the South-Western part of Nigeria. Still, they are spread across West African countries, including Togo, Benin Republic, Ghana, and Cameroon in Central Africa. People of this ethnic identity are also found as far as South America. They are mostly found in Cuba, Brazil, and Ecuador in South America.

The Igbos are majorly found in the South-Eastern part of the country. Large portions of the ethnic group are also found in the Central African countries, including Gabon, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea.

The Hausa people are majorly found in the North Western part of the country; they are the largest ethnic group in Central and West Africa. They can be found in Chad, Niger, Eritrea, Ghana, Sudan, Cameroon, and the Benin Republic.

Some minor ethnic groups in Nigeria include Tiv, Idoma, Ikwerre, Urboho, Itsekiri, Nupe, Kanuri, Ibibio, Anaang, Berom, Esan, Jukun, Chamba, Tarok, Ogoni, Kalabari and many more. These ethnic groups all together make up the over 200 million population of the country. Nigeria is also the country with the largest black population.

We celebrate with Nigeria on its 62nd Independence Anniversary. Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!
